Colourful, densely drawn and quietly homely, the Hobonichi Techo A5 Cousin Cover Yumi Kitagishi: White Cat Village is the illustrator’s fourth collaboration with Hobonichi. The front shows a town the white cats call home — a dollhouse-and-garden-party world painted in acrylic gouache and printed on polyester so the original colour and texture stay vivid. Beneath a great tree and a hill, houses stand in rows while animals work and play in every corner.
Open the cover and the lining feels like a pale-green wallpapered room. The right-hand pocket shows a white cat at a dollhouse. Butterfly-stopper pen holders are made in the manner of Tyrolean tape, with small flowers; the bookmark is a plain ribbon. On the back, the village sits down to afternoon tea on a grassy slope. Inside that pocket is a hidden glimpse of a tree-house basement. Tucked into a corner: “HOPE YOU HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY.”
